Canadian cafés have decided to rename the American coffee as a form of protest against Donald Trump's policies. Instead, it can now be found on menus as the "Canadian". This decision is due to the U.S. president's proposal to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican products.

The renaming of the American coffee was initiated by Kicking Horse Coffee, which proposed this modification to the establishments it supplied. The company stated that since 2018 they had adopted this name for the hot beverage and have now decided to make it official, inviting cafés across the country to join the cause.

William Oliveira, owner of Café Belém in Toronto, explained in an interview that the intention is not to be political but rather to defend Canadian pride. "We don't necessarily aim to be political, but we love the idea of supporting Canadian pride," he mentioned.

American coffee is a beverage that does not contain milk, essentially made up of espresso and hot water. Generally, it is prepared without sugar or cream, although sometimes one or two doses of espresso are added. By adding water, the flavor of the coffee is diluted, filling the cup and completing the portion; hence it is known in some cafés as Long Black.

As for preparing American coffee, it is taught to first make the espresso with a coffee maker or specialized machine, before adding the water. If cream or milk is decided to be added, it is recommended not to mix them to initially taste the same intensity of the coffee and later enjoy the authentic flavor of the original recipe.
