President of the USA Donald Trump increased the customs duties on Canadian steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% in response to the introduction of countervailing Canadian duties of 25% on the export of electricity to the United States.
Trump wrote: "Canada must also immediately remove its retaliatory tariffs on American farm products ranging from 250% to 390% on various American dairy products." "I have instructed the trade minister to impose additional tariffs of 25% on products that come into effect tomorrow morning."
Trump also added that he would keep the tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada at 25% to give American producers an opportunity to compete. More details on Trump's plans are expected to be announced in the near future.
Following the president's announcement on increasing tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports from 25% to 50%, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mark Garneau stated that they intend to maintain their tariffs until "Americans show understanding."
