The President of the United States, Donald Trump, according to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, is trying to sow uncertainty among his trade partners with the aim of destabilizing them and weakening their position in trade negotiations. Trump raised concerns in the markets by suggesting the imposition of tariffs of up to 25 percent on Mexico and Canada starting February 1, even though this seemed to conflict with an executive order establishing a review of trade relations before April 1.
Trudeau, who will leave office in March, indicated that the Canadian government is ready to back and compensate citizens and companies in the country in case harmful tariffs to the economy are applied. He expressed that they have already experienced similar situations during Trump's previous term, but this time he assures that Canada will respond with strong retaliation.
The Canadian government has prepared lists of tariffs against products manufactured in the United States worth up to 150 billion Canadian dollars in case of actions by Trump. Trudeau warned that if the tariffs continue, they are willing to match them dollar for dollar as a principle of response.
Trudeau emphasized the importance of collaboration between Canada and the United States, highlighting that both nations succeed when they work together on essential issues.
