The large customs dispute between the two countries is merely a procedural compliance issue related to a dispute that has not been resolved between the United States and Canada. According to the statements of Canadian Ambassador Kirsten Hillman in Washington, Canada seeks to avoid the need for a reciprocal customs duty related to aluminum and steel imports.
It is worth noting that the U.S. president has already imposed significant tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Canada in recent times, which has led the Canadian government to seek alternatives for diplomatically resolving the dispute.
Hillman emphasized that Canada is ready to cooperate with the United States to resolve the dispute and avoid additional tariffs. She pointed to the importance of joint efforts between the two countries to maintain the existing trade relationships and avoid further trade tensions.
Hillman concluded her remarks by stating: "We believe that cooperation and dialogue are the only way to resolve trade disputes between Canada and the United States, and we hope for a prompt and fair resolution that serves the interests of both countries."
