Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, called for calm and patience in light of the possibility that the U.S. government will impose tariffs of 25% on Mexican products. During a morning press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of waiting for the decision from the United States, stating that her government has several action plans to address this situation.
Sheinbaum stressed that despite the uncertainty, her administration has maintained communication with U.S. authorities and has worked on necessary agreements and coordinations. Regarding the reduction in fentanyl seizures in the United States, the president presented a graph that demonstrates the good work done by Mexico in this regard.
The Mexican president highlighted the joint work between both countries, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and coordination to tackle such situations. Sheinbaum underscored the need to maintain calm and patience as the deadline for the imposition of tariffs by the United States approaches, stating that it is essential to wait calmly for the final decision.
The potential impact of the tariffs would affect various industries such as textiles, automotive, medical devices, and agriculture, which also depend on the trade integration of the USMCA. In light of this situation, different sectors have expressed opposition to the imposition of trade tariffs, warning about the consequences for the economies of the three countries.
On the other hand, Canada's Foreign Minister, Mélanie Joly, stated that Canada is prepared to retaliate against the United States in case the tariffs announced by President Donald Trump are applied. Joly declared that her country will take equivalent measures worth up to 155 billion Canadian dollars if the U.S. ultimately decides to impose the proposed tariffs.
