The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has directly responded to the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, after he announced a 25% tariff on American products. Trump assured that he will impose additional tariffs "immediately in a similar amount" in retaliation.
Trudeau had stated that he saw no justification for the United States imposing tariffs at this time, calling the measure "very foolish." Additionally, Canada intends to file a complaint against the United States with the World Trade Organization for imposing tariffs on Canadian products without justified grounds.
In light of the situation, Trudeau is seeking the support of the Mexican government, as Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, has announced she will take both tariff and non-tariff measures against the United States in response to Trump's decision.
In an attempt at pressure, Trump referred to Trudeau as "the governor of Canada," warning that if Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs, he will respond similarly, immediately increasing the amount in proportion to what the Canadian government imposes.
Trudeau's announcement from Ottawa indicated the imposition of 25% tariffs on American products worth $155 billion, a measure that will remain in effect until the United States lifts its tariffs.
