Ontario Increases Electricity Tariff Amid U.S. Tariffs

The Canadian province of Ontario announced a 25 percent increase in the price of electricity it sells to 1.5 million households in the states of Minnesota, New York, and Michigan in retaliation for the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite the temporary pause in tariffs announced by Trump, Ontario confirmed that it will maintain the electricity price increase unless the threat of tariffs is permanently removed.

The province also canceled a contract with Elon Musk's Starlink and has removed alcoholic beverages from the United States from its stores. Doug Ford, the head of the Ontario government, expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation caused by the tariffs, mentioning that the pause in the imposition of some tariffs is not enough and that they will remain firm until the threat of tariffs completely disappears.

In another context, Trump announced a temporary suspension of tariffs on Mexico and Canada for a month, extending the exemption only to goods covered by the USMCA. This decision has generated uncertainty among businesses that trade between the three countries, as the tariff exemption will last only a month.
