The government of the Canadian province of Ontario has begun to implement a 25 percent tax on all electricity exports directed to Michigan, Minnesota, and New York in the United States. This measure, which came into effect this Monday, will affect 1.5 million households and businesses in the mentioned states.
In response to the imposition of tariffs by U.S. President Trump, Ontario Premier Doug Ford declared that he will not hesitate to increase the tax or even completely stop electricity exports if the trade war continues. Ford stated that his province will use all available tools to protect Ontario's interests as long as the threat of tariffs on exports persists.
This tax is expected to generate daily revenues of up to 400,000 Canadian dollars and increase the monthly electricity bills of Americans in the three mentioned states by about 100 Canadian dollars. Ford has criticized the tariffs imposed by Trump, calling them a disaster for the U.S. economy, and has assured that Ontario will not back down in its defense against these trade measures.
