The Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, has decided to suspend the tariffs imposed on electricity exports to the United States in response to Donald Trump's tariffs. This decision is the result of a phone conversation with the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Ford announced this resolution through a joint statement with official Howard Lutnick.
In detail, Ontario has agreed to eliminate the 25 percent surcharge that was applied to electricity exports to Michigan, New York, and Minnesota as a retaliatory measure. Previously, on Monday, March 10, the Ontario minister had raised electricity prices for these three states by the same proportion, in response to tariffs imposed by President Trump.
Ontario's measure involved a surcharge of 10 Canadian dollars (7 U.S. dollars) per megawatt-hour on all energy exported to Michigan, Minnesota, and New York. For his part, Secretary Lutnick has agreed to meet with Premier Ford in Washington on Thursday, March 13, along with the U.S. Trade Representative, to discuss the renewal of NAFTA before the deadline for reciprocal tariffs on April 2.
