Freeland Proposes International Summit on Trade

Chrystia Freeland, a Canadian politician aiming to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister, has suggested the possibility of collaborating with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to reform global trade and weaken China's influence in supply chains. Freeland has stated that Trump is seeking to impose significant tariffs on Canada and other allies, partly to pave the way for stricter policies towards China.

In an interview with Bloomberg News, Freeland mentioned that Trump's stance toward his closest partners may be a tactic to pressure China. Freeland has identified Scott Bessent, who has been confirmed as Treasury Secretary, as a possible ally for Canada in the reshaping of global trade. She argues that Canada can significantly contribute to efforts to balance the global economy.

Throughout her career, Freeland has demonstrated her determination by leading key trade negotiations, such as those for the North American Free Trade Agreement during Trump's first term. Despite tensions, negotiations concluded with an updated agreement that was considered a political victory in Canada during Trudeau's government.

Regarding Trump's stance toward Canada, the president has criticized the U.S. trade deficit with the country, especially in imports of oil, gas, and other goods. Freeland has promised to respond firmly if the U.S. imposes tariffs, threatening proportional retaliation that would affect specific products in a "dollar-for-dollar" approach.

After Freeland showed harsh criticism towards Trump's administration, including comments on social media, she has promised a trade retaliation policy that could significantly impact the United States if tariffs are imposed. Freeland has positioned herself as a figure capable of standing up to the U.S. administration on trade issues, showing resilience against any measures she deems harmful to Canada.
