Earlier today, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the USA of starting a trade war by imposing tariffs and promised to implement additional measures in response. "The USA declared a trade war on Canada today, and this contradicts the interests of its closest partners, allies, and friends," Trudeau stated at a press conference. "Canadians are logical and polite, but we will not back down when our country and the well-being of all those who live in it are at stake."
Trudeau referred to US President Donald Trump, directly stating that although he does not typically agree with the Wall Street Journal, "Donald, they say, even though you are a very smart person, this step is extremely foolish." He also noted that the US government decided to make Americans' everyday lives more expensive, pointing to increases in prices and inflation, which, as he explained, are expected to rise significantly.
Trump imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico starting today, regardless of earlier agreements. Trudeau announced the introduction of analogous tariffs (25%) on imports from the USA on 155 billion Canadian dollars (107 billion US dollars) and added that Canada intends to implement additional measures to show Trump that "there are no winners in a trade war."
Trump on Tuesday threatened additional tariffs on Canadian goods in case of retaliatory actions by Ottawa.
