After the elections held in Canada on Monday, Mark Carney committed to govern "with all parties, all territories, and civil society." He also warned that he would negotiate a new bilateral relationship with the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
In his speech, Carney emphasized that the old relationship with the United States, based on increasing integration, has come to an end. He added that Canada would take care of its own interests and look after its citizens. He also mentioned that they would explore other options for the prosperity of Canadians, strengthening relationships with partners in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere.
"We are going to chart a new path forward because this is Canada and we decide what happens here," Carney stressed. Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, acknowledged his defeat and congratulated Carney, ensuring that he would continue in his role to hold the Government accountable.
Although the Liberals maintained a lead throughout the night, the Conservative Party achieved a better-than-expected outcome, with the Liberals only five seats away from a majority. Carney pointed out that the open global trading system, which relied on the United States, has come to an end.
In Carney's speech, while projections gave the Liberal Party 167 seats (the absolute majority is at 172), he mentioned that they have overcome the impact of American betrayal, but they must not forget the lessons learned.
On the other hand, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo publicly congratulated Mark Carney on his victory as Prime Minister of Canada.
