After the United States confirmed the imposition of a 25% tariff on Canada, the audience attending the National Hockey League (NHL) game between the Ottawa Senators and the American team Minnesota Wild in Ottawa, Canada, booed the national anthem of the United States played before the match.
The artist Mandia began the performance of The Star-Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States, at the Canadian Tire Centre in the Canadian capital in front of players from both teams, which elicited an unusual reaction of boos from the spectators. These boos were directly provoked by the decision of U.S. President Donald Trump to impose a 25% tariff on all exports from Canada, except for oil and gas, which received a 10% tariff.
Fans of the Ottawa Senators immediately joined in on these reactions, but they were not the only ones, as some Canadian provinces, such as Nova Scotia and British Columbia, announced restrictive measures to limit access for U.S. companies to their public contracts and stopped selling alcoholic products coming from the United States in response to the imposed tariffs.
