Mark Carney Becomes 24th Prime Minister of Canada

This Friday, economist Mark Carney became the twenty-fourth Prime Minister of Canada, replacing Justin Trudeau after taking the oath of office in a ceremony in Ottawa. Previously, Trudeau met privately with the Governor General of the country, Mary Simon, to formalize his resignation after more than nine years in office.

"We are facing significant economic challenges, particularly with the tariff policy of the United States and its trading partners," Carney stated upon assuming this new role. The new Prime Minister also presented his cabinet, which retains several ministers from Trudeau's previous government (2015-2025). François-Philippe Champagne took on the role of Minister of Finance, being one of the key members of this smaller 24-member team.

Carney plans to travel to London and Paris in the coming days to strengthen Canada's ties with Europe, given the complicated relationship with the United States. Upon return, he is expected to call for early elections before Parliament resumes sessions on March 24.

Regarding changes in the cabinet, Dominic LeBlanc moved from Finance to Intergovernmental Affairs, Mélanie Joly remains as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Chrystia Freeland, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, took on the role of Minister of Transport and Domestic Trade after her defeat to Carney in the Liberal Party leadership race. Previously, she had been Minister of Industry.
