Canada Imposes New Tariffs on US Goods

Canada will announce on Wednesday, March 12, additional tariffs of 30 billion Canadian dollars (20.8 billion US dollars) on products made in the United States in response to tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration on steel and aluminum. The new tariffs will take effect on Thursday, March 13, according to Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc.

The Canadian retaliation will affect steel, aluminum, and other American products, matching the new US tariffs. In total, it will impact 12.6 billion Canadian dollars in steel products, 3 billion Canadian dollars in aluminum, and 14.2 billion Canadian dollars in other items.

Melanie Joly, Canada's Foreign Minister, called the US tariffs "unjustified and unjustifiable" and plans to discuss the matter with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the G7 meeting in Quebec. Trudeau previously imposed tariffs on US products in response to President Trump.

Canada's designated Prime Minister, Mark Carney, stated that the tariffs on the United States will remain in place until Donald Trump commits to "free and fair" trade. Mexico has not yet taken a stance on the tariffs, but Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy, traveled to the US to negotiate a pause on the tariffs on steel and aluminum. Ebrard emphasized that Mexico imports more than it exports to the US and discussed the unjustifiability of the tariffs during Claudia Sheinbaum's morning briefing.
