At the end of December 2024, South Korea experienced the worst civil aviation accident in its history, with 179 fatalities. Then, on January 30, 2025, a plane collided with a helicopter in Washington, United States, with no reported injuries among passengers and crew.
In the case of the air crash in Toronto, at least 9 people were injured, including three in serious condition, following the impact between an American Airlines plane and a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter. According to AP information, several injured were transported to local hospitals, adding to a global list of 218 passengers who died in aviation accidents during 2024.
American Airlines flight 5542 came from Wichita, Kansas, with 60 passengers and four crew members, while the military helicopter was carrying three military personnel. Just a few days earlier, in Philadelphia, another accident claimed six lives when a small plane crashed in a residential area.
These air incidents have marked the beginning of 2025 with concerns about aviation safety. In the case of the Delta Airlines flight that made an emergency landing at Pearson Airport in Toronto, Canada, authorities reported that all passengers and crew were safe after the plane overturned on the runway.
Television and social media images showed the plane flipped onto its roof with apparent smoke coming from the aircraft; however, the evacuation was carried out safely according to local police. Although there was a tense moment at Toronto airport, emergency operations were successfully conducted.
The incident joins a series of air incidents that have taken place in different parts of the world in the early months of 2025, generating concern and questions about safety and emergency protocols in civil aviation.
