Jorge Islas Declines Invitation for Consulate Leadership

Jorge Islas López, Mexico's former consul in NYC, declines a new leadership role amidst allegations of harassment and discrimination from female colleagues, citing his commitment to human rights.

Jorge Islas Declines Invitation for Consulate Leadership

Jorge Islas López was appointed vice president of the Legal Committee of the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA), based in Toronto, Canada, after serving as legal director of the National Chamber of the Radio and Television Industry (CIRT). In May 2019, during López Obrador's administration, he was appointed Consul General of Mexico in New York.

Recently, Jorge Islas López announced that he declined the invitation from Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente to head the General Coordination of Consulates. This came after he was accused of harassment, bullying, and discrimination by a group of 16 women, mostly workers from the Mexican Foreign Service and the consulate in New York. In a statement, Islas López labeled the accusations against him as "unfounded claims" and decided to decline the invitation to align with his convictions in favor of human rights and gender equality.

The document presented details that previous complaints against Islas López at the Mexican Foreign Ministry, the Secretariat for Public Function, and the Internal Control Body only resulted in recommendations to receive training in gender, discrimination, assertiveness, leadership, and teamwork. Islas López thanked for the consideration for the position and the support received, especially from the Mexican community in New York, asserting his commitment to migrants' rights.

Jorge Islas López is a lawyer specialized in transparency and the right to information, graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and holds a master's degree in Law from Columbia University. He has been a lecturer at UNAM and the Autonomous Institute of Technology of Mexico, in addition to being part of the International Governing Council of the ARTICLE 19 association in London. He has also had experience as a legal consultant for TV Azteca in the past.
