Mark Carney headed the Bank of Canada during the global financial crisis of 2008 and helped the country recover more quickly compared to many others. His victory in the internal Liberal Party elections, in which more than 150,000 members participated, means he defeated Krista Freeland, a former finance minister. Carney, who served for 59 years, is regarded as a prominent economic figure on the international stage. In 2013, he became the first non-Briton to head the Bank of England since its founding in 1694 and was recognized for his work in the United Kingdom. Currently, as Canada faces economic challenges, such as threatening increases in customs duties from the administration of Donald Trump, rising food and housing prices, and increased immigration, the new Prime Minister of Canada will likely face serious challenges. Although Carney has no direct experience in politics, he has garnered broad support from ministers and members of parliament since announcing his candidacy. It is expected that after taking office, he may hold early elections or announce them formally or through a referendum led by the opposition in parliament. Given the approach of federal elections, Mark Carney will have to convince voters with his ability to make decisions during this critical period and navigate the competition with other parties vying to oust the ruling Liberal Party. Results showed that economist and former Governor of the Central Bank Mark Carney secured victory in the leadership contest of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada, becoming the new Prime Minister of Canada after Justin Trudeau.
